Quakecon, probably the largest gaming even in north America, is hosting this years event in Gaylord Texan resort in Grapevine, Texas August 11-14. I went there last year, and it was one of the best experiences I have had. With a 3200 BYOC (Bring Your Own Computer) area, thousands of dollars worth of prize money for tournaments, free swag, good speeches from the game developers along with some other quite interesting events. To top it all off, its completly free. So if you are into stuff like this, as my self, highly recomend you go register as soon as possible at Quakecon.org since the registration fills up quite fast (already 3000 registered in less than 24 hours), much better than not registering and decideding to go to the event and wait on lines for hours and hours.
