The loss of one of my main hard drives a few weeks back forced me to get a replacement, and while I was at it I also decided to do a upgrade to the setup of my disks. So I decided to come up with a somewhat elaborate yet close to impossible idea of giving each of the 4 drives its own channel, and then setting up raid0 for the first 12GB of each drive, and then a combination of no raid, and raid 0 for my home drive and etc. Because of this I placed order for two more hard drives, as well as two more twin channel IDE controller cards (since I also have two optical drives). This all seems simple enough so far.
To make things slightly complicated, my parts will all be arriving this monday at or before 4:30PM. My deadline will be wed at 6PM since I will be heading out to quakecon. Thats not too bad, but since I just love working with insane deadlines I have made up my mind to see if I would be able to compile my kernel with reiser4 support and make all my system mounts reiser4 file system because of their insane performance I got when I did this to my parents computer. To make things worse, I have a major final exam wed morning which will continue until noon. And just hopefully, the disk controllers won’t crap right back at me and not decide to work as well.
hda [50MB raid1 ext2 /boot][12GB 0 Reiser4 /][1GB - swap][187GB]
hdb [50MB raid1 ext2 /boot][12GB 0 Reiser4 /][30GB - fat32 /win][78GB]
hdc [12GB raid0 Reiser4 /][50GB raid1 /home][98GB]
hdd [12GB raid0 Reiser4 /][50GB raid1 /home][98GB]
The last partitions will all be just pure file storage, and a back up of the root partition since the chances of the raid0 array going back is extremly high. The last thing I want is sitting there fragging, when all of a sudden one of the drives failing on me and losing everything.
Let see if I can set up this desired drive setup to work, as well as ace my calculus final at the same time, all within 49.5 hours starting 4:30PM Monday and ending at 6PM Wednsday.
